Oil Absorbing Calendula Face Cream for Oily Skin
I was tinkering around in my beauty lab (a.k.a my kitchen) and formulated this oil absorbing facial cream that whipped up nice and thick and worked very well as a foundation primer. If you have oily skin, you are going to really like this.
The water phase is a mixture of Calendula Hydrosol and Calendula Tincture (click here to learn how to make tinctures).
The oil absorbing business part of the face cream is from the Kaolin Clay which is a naturally absorbent and very fine white clay.
Oil Absorbing Calendula Face Cream for Oily Skin
20 grams Calendula Hydrosol10 grams Calendula Tincture/Extract
17 grams Jojoba Oil
6 grams Emulsifying Wax NF
2 grams Stearic Acid
2.5 grams Kaolin Clay
1 gram/20 drops Grapefruit Seed Extract
10 drops Lavender Essential Oil
5 drops Tea Tree Essential Oil
3 drops Grapefruit Seed Essential Oil
Measure in the hydrosol and tincture in a sterile glass measuring cup. In another glass measuring cup, measure in the Jojoba oil, Emulsifying Wax, Stearic Acid and Kaolin Clay. Place both measuring cups into a simmering water bath. Heat both to about 140 degrees. Remove from heat and pour both into a larger sterile glass measuring cup. Blend with a stick blender or whisk for about 5 minutes or until the mixture is below 100 degrees. Add in your Grapefruit Seed Extract and essential oils. Continue to whisk for about 10 to 15 minutes or until your cream is starting to firm up. Transfer to sterile containers and either keep in the fridge or use within 60 days.
Here the two phases are in the simmering water bath. |
Here is a photo showing the warm mixture being whisked to cool it and emulsify it.
Just keep whisking until the mixture lightens up and firms up. Failure to mix long enough may cause the product to separate.
Fill up your sterile container with the product and keep a tight lid on it. Never use your fingers to retrieve the cream.
For safety's sake, I like to keep the larger container in the fridge in refill a smaller 1/2 ounce container to help it stay fresher.
