Professional Lip Balm Formula

 

Here is a reliable, professional-style lip balm formula that makes approximately 15–16 standard lip balm tubes (0.15 oz/4.25 g each), perfect for gift-giving or stocking your own collection. Beeswax provides structure, firmness, and helps create a protective barrier on the lips. Shea butter is a rich emollient that softens and conditions dry lips, while coconut oil adds silky glide and a subtle natural shine. Jojoba oil, technically a liquid wax ester rather than a true oil, contributes a smooth, lightweight feel that closely resembles the skin's natural protective lipids. Castor oil gives the balm a cushiony texture and beautiful gloss, while vitamin E helps slow the oxidation of the oils, extending freshness (although it is not a preservative). The shelf life is governed largely by the freshest ingredient with the shortest remaining life ad not simply by the addition of vitamin E.

If desired, add a lip-safe essential oil or flavor oil during the cool-down phase. For this formula, use approximately 0.25–0.5% by weight, following the manufacturer's recommended usage rate. Peppermint, spearmint, or sweet orange are popular choices, but an unscented balm is equally effective.

For a vegan version, the formula should be reformulated rather than simply substituting the beeswax. Candelilla and carnauba waxes are significantly harder than beeswax and require different percentages to achieve a similar texture. I like to get my ingredients from Mountain Rose Herbs. 

1 ounce (28 grams) Beeswax pastilles

0.6 oz (17 grams) Shea butter

0.6 oz (17 ) grams Coconut Oil

0.2 oz (6 grams) Jojoba Oil

0.05 oz (1.5 grams) Vitamin E 

0.05 (1.5 grams) Castor oil

10 drops of essential oil

In a heat-safe glass beaker or Pyrex cup, melt the beeswax, shea butter, coconut oil, and jojoba oil over a gentle double boiler until completely melted. Remove from the heat and stir in the Vitamin E, Castor Oil, and essential oils. Quickly but carefully pour into 10 empty lip balm tubes (1/4 ounce size). Allow to cool and solidify, and then cap, label, and store in a cool place.  

Because this balm contains no water, a preservative is not required. However, always use clean, dry equipment and avoid introducing water into the finished product.
