Rosa damascena: Steam Distilled and Solvent Extracted

The rose has been valued for its beauty and its perfume for thousands of years. Because rose oil deteriorates rapidly with exposure to sun and wind, the content is highest on the first morning when the flower opens. Rose petals picked for distillation are picked manually, day by day, at or just before sunrise. (source: Mountain Rose Herbs)

The distinctive scent of the rose derived from acyclic monoterpene alcohols, geraniol (up to 75%), citronellol (20%) and nerol (20%), and long-chain hydrocarbons like nonadecane or heneicosane (up to 10%). An important trace component of rose oil is beta-damascenone. Even though this chemical makes up only 0.01% of the weight of the rose, its presence or absence determines the appeal of the rose. Mountain Rose Herbs offers both a steam distilled essential oil and a solvent extracted absolute rose oil.

The steam distilled essential oil from Rosa damascena is one of the most expensive essential oils on the market! Mainly used in the fragrance industry. The distilled oil is also known for its sedative and aphrodisiac effects.  It takes around 10,000 lbs of rose petals to distill one pound of oil. The essential oil blends well with Benzoin, bergamot, chamomile, clary sage, fennel, geranium, ginger, helichrysum, jasmine, lavender, lemon, mandarin, neroli, patchouli, petitgrain, sandalwood, ylang yang   and vetiver.  Mountain Rose Herbs has a Certified Organic essential oil that is beautiful.  The price for 1/8 ounce is $132.00.  You can really splurge and buy the 1 ounce bottle for a mere $700.00.  You can click HERE to be taken to the Mountain Rose Herbs website

Another option in buying a beautiful extract of Rosa damascena is to purchase Mountain Rose Herbs Rose Absolute.  It is alcohol extracted from the same Rosa damascena and instead of being used therapeutically, it is mostly used in the fragrance industry.  The amount of suggested dermal use is much higher in the absolute versus the essential oil.  Also, the price is more economical.

Mountain Rose Herbs offers a 1/8 ounce bottle for only $43.75 and a full 1 ounce bottle is just $230.00.  The aroma is Rich, sweet, spicy-floral, tenacious and beautiful.  If you are interested in purchasing this from Mountain Rose Herbs, CLICK HERE

D.I.Y Refill for the EOS ™ Lip Balm

Reuse your EOS ™ Lip Balm container with your own recipe
I recently made a tutorial on how to use your own natural lip balm recipe to refill the store-brand egg-shaped lip balm containers.  I was not 100% sure I could figure out how to refill the EOS ™ Lip Balm containers, but I DID...Yippeee!!!

First step is to remove the cap from the EOS ™ Lip Balm container (as seen above).

Carefully pop the base from the bottom. Never use anything sharp or dangerous to separate the two pieces.

See all the good stuff that is left in the bottom! I just transferred it to a little pot for use later because I actually like EOS ™ Lip Balm and will use the leftover as a cuticle cream.

The EOS ™ Lip Balm containers have three parts.  You have the top, the base and the bottom.  You want to twist part #3 (as seen in the above picture) into part #1.

Once you have the two pieces put together, you are ready to make the lip balm recipe.

Customize Your Recipe:

You need 1 teaspoon of your favorite carrier oil such as olive, sweet almond, apricot seed, hemp seed, sunflower seed, or even grape seed oil. You can mix and match as many oils as you like, just make sure you have 1 teaspoon total.

You need a heaping 1/2 teaspoon of your choice(s) of cocoa butter, coconut oil, lanolin, Shea butter, Kokum butter and/or mango butter.  You can mix and match as many oils as you like, just make sure you have 1/2 heaping teaspoon total.

You need a heaping 1/2 teaspoon of beeswax or carnauba wax.

You need 1/8 teaspoon of Vitamin E Oil

You can add up to 4 drops of your favorite essential oil such as orange, lemon, lime, peppermint, spearmint or even rosemary.

Measure out the carrier oils, beeswax, and butter and  place them into a glass or metal container and sit the container into a simmering water bath. Stir to melt. Remove from heat and stir in the Vitamin E Oil and the Essential Oils. Mix well.

Carefully pour the lip balm into the container (the part on the left in the photo above).   Allow the lip balm to harden for at least 1 to 2 hours. Pop the bottom piece back onto the other piece and you are ready to go!!

You can find a step-by-step tutorial HERE

D.I.Y Refill for Egg Shaped Lip Balms

Fresh-Picked Beauty's D.I.Y tutorial on how to refill those egg-shaped lip balms
I was checking out at a local pharmacy and the clerk asked me if I would like a free lip balm.  It was one of those cute little egg shaped lip balms similar to the EOS lip balms. I guess a lot of stores are making their own brand of sphere shaped lip balms. When I got home I was surprised at all the questionable ingredients and said to myself,  "I would NEVER put this on my lips!"

I mean just take a look at these ingredients! How awful!!! Of course I started thinking about all the good ingredients that should have made their way into this lip balm.  I had a brilliant idea! Refill it with my own recipe!!

The fake strawberry smelling product needed to get scooped out because it smelled horrible!!

There is a little button on the bottom of most store-brand lip balm containers that can be popped off with your fingernail. I think there must be a company that is making these and just putting the various store's labels on them. Several retailers are offering their own brand and using the same type of container.  This gives you access to refill it with your own natural recipe. I scraped as much as I could out and then ran hot water through it to remove the remaining product.

After you remove the lip balm product you will have four parts.  The base, the grate, the closing button and the cap.  You want to push the grate back into the base and close with the lid. Leave the closing button off so you can add your lip balm recipe.

You need 3/4 teaspoon of Mountain Rose Herbs Olive Oil.

You need a heaping 1/2 teaspoon of Mountain Rose Herbs Beeswax.

You need 1/4 teaspoon of Mountain Rose Herbs Jojoba Oil

You need 1/4 teaspoon of organic extra virgin coconut oil.

You need 1/4 teaspoon of Mountain Rose Herbs Shea Butter.

You need 2 drops of Peppermint Essential Oil and 2 drops of Spearmint Essential Oil for a sweet minty lip balm.  You can also substitute  a few drops of orange or lemon or even lavender if you like!

Finally, you will need 1/8 teaspoon of Mountain Rose Herbs Vitamin E Oil.

Measure out the olive oil, beeswax, coconut oil, jojoba oil, and shea butter.  Place it into a glass or metal container and sit the container into a simmering water bath. Stir to melt. Remove from heat and stir in the Vitamin E Oil and the Essential Oils. Mix well

Carefully pour the lip balm into container.  Place the closing button firmly back on and allow the lip balm to harden for at least 1 to 2 hours.

This is what my lip balm looked like after it set up.  PERFECT!! ORGANIC!!! NOURISHING!!! NATURAL!!! This was a super fun recipe!!!

You can find these store brand lip balms at various retailers such as pharmacies, discount stores and even online.  You won't be able to refill the original EOS lip balms because you don't have access to the bottom.  Just make sure that the lip balm container has the removable closing button at the bottom and you can refill the container. You can also find them at Alibaba.com, but you will need to order a minimum of 10,000 containers....LOL!!! I am pretty sure you will be able to refill your same container over and over for several times.

Hope you liked this tutorial!! Let me know how it worked out for you.

Cheers!
Shannon

Swimmer's Water Resistant Lip Balm

Fresh-Picked Beauty's Water Resistant Lip Balm
As soon as school is out, my family and I head over the mountains to Lake Chelan in Washington State.  We love the outdoors and we spend a good deal of time swimming in the pristine lake.  My lips tend to lose their moisture and often times become super dry and chapped.  Most of the lip balms I make are moisturizing and healing, however they are not super water resistant.  I like to use a heavier and thicker lip balm when my lips are exposed to water.  I have a special recipe for you that uses super-rich carrier oils and pure lanolin.  Apply this water resistant lip balm before swimming and your lips will stay moisturized and protected.

*****If you don't want to make this yourself, I am selling a limited quantity (ONLY 8 TUBES AVAILABLE) at my Etsy ShopClick HERE to order.  They are only $5.00 per tube and it is a first-come basis. They will go quick so hurry if you want one!!!*************

This is a view of Lake Chelan from my dock.

Place the beeswax and the carnauba wax into a small glass or metal container and place the container into a simmering water bath. Allow to fully melt.  Add in the carrier oils and lanolin.
