Buckwheat Honey & Carob Coconut Sugar Body Scrub

This incredible all-over body scrub is literally good enough to eat.  Fashioned out of dark buckwheat honey (which I keep well stocked in my pantry for wintertime coughs), mineral rich carob powder and coconut sugar, this rich and decadent exfoliating scrub is an excellent treat for your entire body.  The best way to use this is pick a warm day and massage it all over your body, paying extra special attention to knees, elbows, hands and feet (places with dry skin).   I like to sit in the shower stall for 20 minutes with the water off and let the honey naturally moisturize my skin before I rinse it off in warm water.  My skin feel amazing and smooth.  The aroma of the delicious honey and carob powder is quite a treat for the senses! You are going to love this recipe.

You will need the following ingredients:

80 grams Buckwheat Honey
15 grams Carob Powder
20 grams Coconut Sugar
15 grams Glycerine

You can find the Buckwheat honey from your local Beekeeper and the other ingredients from a Natural Market.
Place the Buckwheat honey in a small bowl.

Whisk in the Carob powder.

Add in the Coconut sugar.

Mix in the glycerine.

Mix everything together very well.  Makes enough for a single all-over-body application.  Should be used within a few days or the coconut sugar will start to soften.  Avoid getting it into your eyes and only use externally.....but give it a small taste if you like!!!

Colors and Textures of Natural Butters

I buy my cocoa butter wafers from Mountain Rose Herbs
Butters are a very important part of making hand-crafted beauty products.  I use them quite often when I want to create a luscious thick cream or a solid lotion bar.  The beauty of a natural butter such as Shea is that it can be used all by itself by simply massaging it into the skin for unparalleled protection.

I use cocoa butter, kokum butter, mango butter and shea butter the most.  These butters vary in their color and texture.  Here is a bit of information about each butter. Thanks to Mountain Rose Herbs for this valuable information.

Cocoa Butter is an aromatic solid butter pressed from the roasted seeds of the Cacao tree (Theobroma cacao) and further processed to yield a warm color and delightful odor. Will soften at body temperature and adds a rich, creamy, and thick consistency to lotions, soaps, creams, and toiletry items to help reduce cutaneous dryness and for the improvement of skin elasticity. A soothing ingredient commonly found in most cosmetic preparations and now fair trade certified at Mountain Rose Herbs.

Cocoa Butter Wafers from Mountain Rose Herbs exhibit the same properties and qualities as their standard Cocoa Butter but in a much more convenient size which makes melting and blending easier. Each wafer or disc measures about 1/2 to 3/4 inch in diameter. Suitable for food and cosmetic use.

Kokum Butter from Mountain Rose Herbs
Kokum Butter from Mountain Rose Herbs is a  highly prized and under-rated butter from the Garcinia tree. This naturally white and incredibly smooth butter has enormously high compositions of beneficial materials to help regenerate tired and worn skin cells and further supports elasticity and general flexibility of the skin wall. A great ingredient to add to healing lotions, creams, and body butters. It can be directly applied to the skin in its solid state, but it may require a mild amount of heating to improve applicability. Highly recommended to those that are crafting cosmetics with the intent of producing a skin healing end product.

Color: White
Texture: Hard

Mango Butter has beneficial moisturizing properties for lotions and acts as a mild lubricant for the skin, and is very similar in color and texture as cocoa butter making it an exotic and fun alternative for toiletry products. Great source of essential fatty acids.

Tea Tree Oil & Cucumber Balancing Day Lotion

I have been swamped with working on getting my Etsy page set up and my products ready to launch.  I am so close to turning my virtual "Open" sign on.  I wanted to share an easy recipe I created using Thayers Alcohol-Free Cucumber Witch Hazel and Mountain Rose Herbs Cucumber Hydrosol.   My recipe is called Tea Tree Oil & Cucumber Balancing Day Lotion.  It smells light, fresh and clean and is great for normal, combination, oily and acne-prone skin types. It is made with fast absorbing jojoba and hazelnut oils along with skin toning witch hazel and purifying tea tree oil. I also added in Leucidal Liquid which is Leuconostoc/Radish Rood Ferment Filtrate and is a natural preservative.  You don't have to add in the Leucidal Liquid and can choose to make it without the natural preservative and simply store the lotion in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.

Tea Tree Oil & Cucumber Balancing Day Lotion
makes 61 grams

20 grams Thayers Cucumber Witch Hazel
20 grams Mountain Rose Herbs Cucumber Hydrosol
6 grams Jojoba Seed Oil
5 grams Hazelnut Oil
1 gram liquid lecithin
4 grams Emulsifying Wax
2 grams Stearic Acid
1 gram Vitamin E
10 drops Tea Tree Essential Oil
2 grams  Leucidal Liquid

Measure out the cucumber witch hazel and cucumber hydrosol into a glass measuring cup and sit it in a pot with a few inches of simmering water.  Measure out the jojoba oil, hazelnut oil, liquid lecithin,  stearic acid, and emulsifying wax into a glass measuring cup and sit it in a pot with a few inches of simmering water.  When both mixtures reach 150 degrees F, remove from the heat.

Carefully pour the oil mixture into a heat-proof mixing bowl and begin mixing with a hand-mixer set on medium speed. Carefully add in the warm witch hazel/hydrosol mixture and continue mixing for 5 minutes.

Once the lotion cools to under 100F, mix in the Vitamin E, Tea Tree Oil and Leucidal Liquid (if using). Pour your lotion into a sterile container and allow to cool completely.

Enjoy!!!!
