Seaside Bath Salt Soak

I was inspired to create this beauty recipe from a similar product I received as a gift which has most of the same ingredients.  I added in Kelp powder, Spirulina powder, and Grapefruit Peel powder (which is said to promote the synthesis of new collagen and improve skin tone!).  I chose to use Epsom salt as it is principally used in bath soaks to sooth, relax and relieve sore muscles.  You can also use Sea Salt if you like.  Simply add a few scoops to warm running bath water and soak your way to happiness.  **Be very careful using this product as it contains oil, and we all know that oil is very slippery.  Don't be shocked if you find a pretty green "ring" around your tub after you finish your bath, just simply rinse it off.

210 grams Epsom Salt

6 grams Powdered Grapefruit Peel

3 grams Spirulina Powder

40 grams Extra Virgin Olive Oil

Essential Oil Blend

9 grams Kelp Powder

Seaside Bath Salt Soak

210 grams Epsom Salt
9 grams Kelp Powder
40 grams Olive Oil

Mix all ingredients together in a small bowl.  Transfer to a glass container and use within 60 days.   Be very careful while using in the bath or shower as it may cause the surface to become very slippery.  Avoid if you are allergic to any of the ingredients.

Pretty green mixture!!!

Herbal Toner for Oily Skin

This toner is formulated for oily complexions and is very astringent and anti-inflammatory.  My recipe contains Witch Hazel Extract to help cleanse oil from the skin and reduce pore size.  I added in a small amount of Aloe Vera Gel as I enjoy its soothing properties.  I also chose Orange Blossom Water since it is mildly astringent and is my favorite hydrosol for oily skin.  You can find Orange Blossom Water from your local Middle Eastern grocery store.  I also chose to add in Calendula extract.  (Click HERE to learn how to make tinctures).  I like Calendula extract as it may help with collagen production.  I also added in a few drops of Lavender, Tea Tree and Palmarosa essential oils.  I use about 2 mls of toner on a cotton pad and gently apply over my freshly washed face. Avoid the eye area.

This is the base of my toner.  I like to use Mountain Rose Herbs Aloe Vera Gel and Witch Hazel Extract.

These are my homespun tinctures.  If you don't want to make your own tinctures, then you can purchase them from Mountain Rose Herbs.

I suggest Mountain Rose Herbs for essential oils.  I really enjoy their Organic Palmarosa Essential Oil.

Store your toner in a glass amber colored bottle.  You can use a dropper insert if you would like. These can be purchased from Mountain Rose Herbs.

30 grams Witch Hazel Extract
15 grams Aloe Vera Gel
10 grams Calendula Tincture

3 drops Palmarosa Essential Oil

Mix all the ingredients into a glass amber colored bottle.  Apply to clean face.  Do not rinse.

Jojoba Oil

The following information is from Mountain Rose Herbs
Jojoba oil comes from the beans of the shrub like plant, simmondsia chinensis. Mountain Rose Herbs offers  the highest grade certified organic, cold pressed oil (actually a liquid plant wax). It is bright and golden in color and is regarded as the most favored in the carrier oil family because of its advanced molecular stability. Also makes a great scalp cleanser for the hair, and is equally wonderful for the skin because it has absorption properties that are similar to our skin's own sebum.

Jojoba oil may become cloudy and solidify as the temperature drops. This is a normal process that occurs from the hardening of the fats and waxes, and it will become stable at or around room temperature. Because Jojoba is not an oil but rather a wax, its shelf life and stability is considerably higher then most oils and rancidity is very rarely a concern. Deep gold in color and with a mild odor. For cosmetic use only.

Rosemary Mint Whipped Shea Body Butter

One of my favorite beauty recipes to make is Whipped Shea Body Butter.  This luxuriously whipped moisturizing creation instantly penetrates your skin and provides long-lasting protection and moisture. You may choose your favorite liquid oil, but I recommend you try Kukui Nut Oil which has high penetrability and soothing properties and can help soothe chapped skin as it contains high levels of the essential fatty acids linoleic acid and alpha-linolenic.  Great for dry skin, psoriasis, eczema and sensitive skin.  Choose your favorite blend of Essential Oils or leave it "naked" and enjoy the natural scent of the unrefined Shea and Cocoa butters.

Rosemary Mint Whipped Shea Body Butter
45 grams Cocoa Butter
90 grams Shea Butter
45 grams Kukui Nut Oil

Gather your ingredients (I use Mountain Rose Herbs products).  Cocoa butter is really hard and is sometimes tricky to break into chunks, be careful!!!

In a medium sized glass or metal bowl, measure out your Cocoa Butter.

Add in your Shea Butter.  Shea Butter is soft enough to be easily scooped out the the jar.

Drizzle in the Kukui Nut Oil.

Place the bowl over a pan of simmering water and allow the butters and oil to melt over low heat.  Takes about 5 minutes.

Allow the melted mixture to cool at room temp for about 10 minutes and then transfer to your freezer for 20 minutes.

Blend mixture with a whisk attachment for about 5 minutes and place back into the freezer for 15 to 20 minutes.

It is getting there!! See how it is starting to turn creamy colored.  Keep whisking and if necessary return to the freezer until mixture is super cold.

Almost ready, just keep whisking!!! Scrape down the sides of the bowl as needed. This is the point when you can add in your essential oils.

Yes!!! We have Whipped Shea Body Butter!!! Looks good enough to eat....but don't!!!

Just for fun, I like to place the body butter in a piping bag, snip the end and pipe it into my containers.  Make sure to use your body butter within 60 days.  Keep in a cool and dark place.  Hot temperatures will cause it to melt.  I like to keep a batch in the fridge during Summer.  Just make sure you clearly label your container.

I hope you enjoy this beauty recipe.  As always, I would love to hear from you when you make this. Let me know how your batch turned out.  Green Blessings!!!

Overnight Rejuvenating Cocoa & Shea Butter Hand Treatment

This charmingly creamy and magnificently moisturizing hand treatment is ideal for applying at bedtime and wearing a pair of thin cotton gloves while you sleep.  You will wake up with soft and lovely hands.  Cocoa Butter is famous for reducing cutaneous dryness and improving skin elasticity.  Shea Butter helps revitalize dull and dry skin and promotes skin renewal.  Enjoy!!!

Overnight Rejuvenating Cocoa & Shea Butter Hand Treatment
makes about 4 ounces

10 grams sweet almond oil
8 grams vegetable glycerin
5 grams Jojoba oil
20 grams cocoa butter
14 grams  Shea butter
5 grams E-Wax NF
2 grams Stearic acid
2 grams beeswax
2 grams lecithin
30 grams Aloe Vera juice
15 grams Rose hydrosol
1 gram Vitamin E
1.25 grams grapefruit seed extract

Bring a 3-inch water bath to a simmer over medium-low heat in a large pot.  Add the sweet almond oil, vegetable glycerin, Jojoba oil, cocoa butter, Shea butter, E-Wax NF, Stearic acid, beeswax, and  lecithin into a large glass Pyrex measuring cup and place in the water bath.  In another glass measuring cup add in the Aloe Vera and hydrosol then place it in the water bath.  Once the oil/wax phase has completely melted and both the water phase and oil/wax phase are within 5 degrees of each other, remove from the heat.

Start mixing the oil/wax phase with a hand held mixer on low. Slowly stream in the water phase while blending.  Continue blending on low speed until mixture begins to thicken.  After it has cooled to 100 degrees, add in the Vitamin E and grapefruit seed extract.  Continue to mix for about 1 minute.  Transfer to a sterile container and use within 60 days.  **The mixture may seem rather thin until it has cooled completely and will then be much thicker.
